Miracle-Gro Potting Mix is a 25 qt. bag formulated for outdoor or indoor container plants including flowers, vegetables, shrubs, annuals and perennials. The mix contains peat moss, perlite, processed forest products or compost, fertilizer and a wetting agent; the added fertilizer feeds potted plants for up to 6 months.
Use in a pot with a drain hole and follow standard repotting steps: fill about one third with mix, loosen the root ball, set plant and top off. One 25 qt. bag fills three 10-inch containers.

What size is the bag and how heavy is it?
25 quarts, 24.41 lb. It is sold moist, which is why a bag this size is heavy. Damp and heavy on arrival is normal; actively sour smelling or split is not.
What plants is it for?
Flowers, vegetables, and herbs in containers, indoors or outdoors. It is a potting mix rather than a garden soil, so it is formulated for pots and planters rather than for digging into beds.
Will it give me fungus gnats?
It can, and this is the most common complaint about bagged potting mix in general. The mix is sold moist and contains organic matter, which is what gnat larvae live in, and bags stored warm are the usual source. It is a nuisance rather than a plant killer and it is manageable:
- Let the top inch dry out between waterings. Larvae need constant moisture and cannot survive a dry surface layer.
- Water from the bottom where you can, so the surface stays dry.
- Use yellow sticky traps at soil level to break the breeding cycle.
- A layer of grit or sand on top stops adults laying.
Spreading the mix out to dry before potting reduces the risk considerably.
Does it drain well?
It carries a drainage rating and is formulated to hold moisture while still draining, which is the balance containers need. For plants that want to dry out fully between waterings it holds too much on its own.
Can I use it for succulents or cacti?
Not on its own. It retains moisture, which is the opposite of what succulents want. Either use a dedicated cactus mix or cut this heavily with perlite or coarse grit.
How long does the feed last?
The feed charge tapers rather than stopping on a date, and the quoted duration is an upper end under light watering. Outdoor pots in full sun that are watered daily flush nutrients faster, so plan to supplement from around three months.
What are the stringy or lumpy bits in the bag?
Usually undissolved wetting agent and coated fertilizer prills, which break down with watering. They are not mold. Batches vary in how much of this is visible.
Why did my mix dry into a hard block?
Peat based mixes become hydrophobic when they dry out completely, which makes them difficult to rewet. Avoid letting pots go bone dry, and mix in perlite to improve recovery. To rescue a set pot, soak it slowly from the bottom rather than pouring water on top, which will run straight off.
How many pots will 25 quarts fill?
Roughly six 10 inch pots, or around twelve 6 inch pots, depending on how much drainage material you put in the base.
